The government started a major program that enables low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford safe, sanitary, and decent homes. The program has proven to be beneficial to all parties involved, making it a great discussion point today.
This is the “Housing Choice Voucher” program (Section 8) in Birmingham and other areas. The program got its name because it gives participants the freedom to choose the type of housing they want from the ones available in the private market. In fact, the participant’s choice isn’t even limited to the units available in the subsidized housing projects. This means that individuals and families participating in these programs can choose between a single-family home, an apartment, or even town houses.
While participants do have many housing options, participants need to ensure that they qualify for the program first.
I Am Not Rich
The first criterion is the total annual gross income of the individual or family. The total income of the family should not exceed 50% of the median income of the county or the metro area, where the family prefers to own a house.
In addition, the Public Housing Agency must provide 75% of the voucher to all those applicants whose income does not exceed 30% of the median income of a given area. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development sets median income levels.
I Am America
Applicants also need to be US citizens, or fall under the specified categories of non-citizens to apply for this program. People with an eligible immigration status can also apply for this housing program.
I Am Who I Say I Am
When you apply for the ‘Housing Choice Voucher’ program, applicants must clear certain Public Housing Agency verifications, which include:
- Family income
- Family size and composition
- Family assets
This information will be verified by the agency with local banks, employers and other local agencies.
It’s only when applicants clear the verification step and meet all the above-mentioned requirements that they can qualify for the “Housing Choice Voucher” Program.
